Fiscal sponsorship
Who actually holds the money
Cover The Caregiver is fiscally sponsored by The Hack Foundation (d.b.a. Hack Club), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 81-2908499).
In practice, that means the funds you donate are not held by a student in a personal account. They sit in an account owned and controlled by The Hack Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) public charity, and every transaction is subject to the sponsor’s compliance review and annual audit obligations.
Our student team proposes a disbursement; the sponsor’s platform records and processes it; the transaction appears on a public ledger that anyone can read without an account, a login, or a request to us.
Sponsor EIN for your records: 81-2908499. Tax receipts are issued by the sponsor, not by Cover The Caregiver.
Controls we operate under
Two-person approval
No grant leaves the account on one student's say-so. The review board chair and the treasurer must both sign off.
Sponsor-level compliance review
Every transaction is reviewed by the fiscal sponsor against 501(c)(3) charitable-purpose rules before it clears.
Public, real-time ledger
Transactions appear on a public page as they happen. We cannot delete or edit history there.
Anonymized recipient IDs
Families appear in our published ledger as a stable coded ID. Nothing on the ledger can identify a household.
Where every dollar goes
93%
Direct respite & relief grants
Paid straight toward hourly professional respite care, lost-income relief, equipment, and utility emergencies for ALS families.
7%
Fiscal sponsorship fee
A flat fee deducted by our fiscal sponsor from incoming donations. It covers our 501(c)(3) status, bookkeeping and tax filing, and all card processing fees.
0%
Salaries & overhead
Every organizer is an unpaid student volunteer. No salaries, no office, no paid fundraising.
Quarterly grant disbursement ledger
Every grant we have awarded
Published after each round closes. Families are identified only by an anonymized ID so a recipient can verify their own grant without anyone else being able to identify them.
No grants have been awarded yet.
Cover The Caregiver is new. We are raising our first round of funds and opening applications; no money has been disbursed to any family to date, and this table is deliberately empty rather than filled with examples.
The moment our first grant is paid, it appears here — date, region, category, amount, and an anonymized family ID — and the running totals above update with it. Until then, the honest number is zero.
This ledger is published and updated at the close of each quarterly round, and every figure is reconciled against our fiscal sponsor’s records before it appears. For the underlying transaction record, which is public and updates in real time, see ourlive sponsor ledger(opens in a new tab).
